A Sweet Way to Start the Day

Woke up this Monday morning and stumbled downstairs for some much needed caffeine and water.

I couldn’t wait to try this new coffee I picked up at Home Goods for only $4.99!

Mmmm…I wish you could all smell how delicious this was!  I loove dessert coffees and teas.  This flavor was Butterscotch Creme from The Java Gourmet.    I usually take my coffee with 2 Splenda/Stevia and just a splash of skim or soy milk.  A little trick I  use is to shake the milk container before pouring to create a foamy top—feels like a Starbucks latte:)

In keeping with the dessert-inspired theme this morning, breakfast was also sweet….

Hot Choco-OATS

Ingredients

  • -1/2 cup oats
  • -1/2 cup water
  • -1/2 cup skim milk
  • -2 tbsp. sugar-free vanilla syrup (I used Torani brand)
  • -1 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder (I used Hershey’s brand)
  • -dollop of whipped cream plain or vanilla, lowfat Greek yogurt

Directions

Stovetop Technique: Takes more time and more bowls to clean, but much creamier end product

  1. In a pot, bring liquids (water, milk, vanilla syrup) to boil on stove
  2. Add oats and reduce heat to a simmer

  • 3. Add cocoa powder and stir continuously until reach desired consistency  ~3-5 minutes (shorter time if you like your oatmeal liquidy, and longer if you like it thicker)

Microwave Technique: If you’re short on time, just throw all ingredients together into bowl and microwave for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

I think every Monday should start with chocolate don’t you?

I’m off to work on some scholarship applications, grocery shop, and a Zumba class tonight.  Have a great Monday, everyone!

Question for you:

What do you usually crave in the AM? Sweet, salty, savory?

Do you plan extra special breakfasts to make it easier to wake up on Mondays?

That coffee sounds great! I’m so happy because in 2 weeks, I’m taking Dan’s coffee maker back to Miami with me (since he never uses it anyway).
I definitely crave sweet in the morning — oatmeal, cereal, coffee with coconut hazelnut creamer . . . yummy!
