Chocolate, Vanilla, Cafe au Lait, oh my! PomX Iced Coffee Review

Morning coffee is pretty much a daily ritual for me.  I love waking up to the smell of the robust flavors being brewed and leisurely sipping on a delicious cup while still in my pajamas.   Coffee is also my drink of choice to help fuel extra long study sessions, or giving me that extra energy boost an hour before a tough workout.

So when the wonderful people over at POMX contacted me (Hi Blue!) asking if I’d like to try out their new line of POMX Iced Coffee, I practically jumped out of my seat and yelling “YES! YES! YES!” to my computer (Normal?)

After reading up a little more about the product, I was even more excited to find out that POMX Iced Coffee is made with Rainforest Alliance Certified™ Arabica coffee, all natural flavors and sweeteners, nonfat milk, and the company’s secret ingredientPOMx: The Antioxidant Super Extract.

What’s so special about the POMX Antioxidant Extract?

POMx is an all-natural, ultra-potent antioxidant extract. Containing a full spectrum of pomegranate polyphenols, POMx is so concentrated that a single capsule has the antioxidant power of a full glass of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice.

In my Biochemistry class, we actually tested the antioxidant level of red wines, tea, Vitamin Water, Gatorade etc. and POM juice ranked the highest out of all of these!**  I was sold!

Aaand the company was generous to let me test not one, but three of their delicious flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, and Cafe au Lait!

Kristen’s Taste:

So I don’t know about all of you, but my first question before taking a sip was, “I wonder if this coffee tastes like pomegranates?”  The answer is actually NOT AT ALL (although I think it might be kind of a cool flavor for coffee! No? Just me?)

 VANILLA

Sugars: 28g/ Sugar Alcohol: 10g

Protein: 11g

Caffeine: 175mg/ 10.5 fl.oz

Yumm, I loved the hints of vanilla in this.  It tasted perfectly sweet, and was the flavor I found myself continuously reaching for in the fridge out of all three.  I had this after a tough workout and it made for a great replenishing drink: great proportion of protein + carbs, and gave me plenty of energy for the rest of my day!

CHOCOLATE

Sugars: 30g/ Sugar Alcohol: 10g

This tasted more like extra sweet chocolate milk than coffee.  I felt like I was a little kid again drinking it with my peanut butter and jelly sandwich :)   This flavor actually was a little too sweet for me (and that is saying a lot because I have a very high tolerance for sweet tastes), so I probably wouldn’t pick up this flavor again (Give me some skim milk and Hershey’s dark chocolate syrup for a real chocolate milk anyday.)

CAFE AU LAIT

Sugars: 20g

My favorite of all three flavors because I felt like I was a drinking a real, gourmet iced coffee.  The little extra fat from the reduced-fat milk (the other flavors were made with nonfat) made all the difference (in a good way!) and gave the Cafe au Lait that full-bodied, creamy and rich taste to make it stand out from the others.  It also had the least amount of sugar from the others which I preferred, but did have a little lower protein.

+ + + + +

Overall, I really enjoyed the taste of these guys!  Creamy, rich, bold flavors.  My biggest problem was how high in sugar they were…albeit organic cane sugar, but sugar is sugar. I’m really not a big fan of drinking my sugars–I’d much rather have a small slice of cake instead, but that’s just me ;)

These drinks would be great though for an after-dinner drink to curb that sweet tooth, a post-workout snack, or especially nice for a little Happy Hour cocktail.  Check out some great cocktail recipes for yourself over at the POMx website.

What would be your favorite and creative ways to enjoy the PomX Iced Coffee?

Hm, I would have to say that I would probably end up using these in a smoothie:)

Hey girl! I had about the same experience with the PomX coffees – cafe au lait was by far my fave and I actually put it over ice to dilute it a bit which worked well (and split with the boy). My boyfriend loved the chocolate one though, to each their own I guess? They would make great cocktails, agreed!

I’m glad to hear they don’t taste like pomegranite.. haha that would be a bit odd.

Kristen!!! I was so excited to see you in my Reader!! I liked the cafe au lait best, too! I used the others to sweeten normal coffee because they were sooo sugary! Hope you had a great weekend, love!
