A Nice Warm Slice of Pie…for Breakfast!
As the Fall comes, I find myself craving warmer foods — hot tea/coffee, soups, warm chili…you get the idea. But when it comes to breakfast, I find myself dealing with a serious identity crisis. Do I go for the cold yogurt/cereal option, or the warm bowl of oats?
I’m just not quite ready to give up my favorite cold breakfast! That is, until I came up with this simple dish that equally satisfies my hot and cold breakfast cravings.
Imagine freshly warmed bites of apple with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and vanilla, atop a rich blanket of sweet, Greek yogurt, coated with crumbles of your favorite granola.
It’s like dessert in a bowl, and made me feel like a was eating a nice warm slice of pie …for breakfast!:)
Try it out and let me know what you think!
Warm Pumpkin-Apple Pie Yogurt

Ingredients:
-small apple (chopped)
-1 cup plain, nonfat plain Greek yogurt
-1/2 cup Kashi Go Lean cereal
-1/2 cup Kashi Honey Sunshine cereal
-Generous amount of pumpkin pie spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice)
-2 tsp. vanilla extract (or sweetener of choice—brown sugar, honey, splenda, agave etc.)
Directions:
1. In microwave-safe dish, place chopped apple sprinkled with pumpkin pie spice and 1 tsp. of sweetener. Microwave for 1-2 minutes (until desired heat)
2. In separate bowl, combine yogurt and cereal (or granola of choice) with tsp. of vanilla extract and more spices if desired
3. Combine the hot apples with the cold yogurt and enjoy!
Feel free to add any other favorite toppings on there. Next time I make this, I plan to include some toasted pumpkin seeds and crushed whole wheat graham crackers on top—yum!
Have you made the switch to hot breakfasts for Fall yet?

For some reason I eat warm oats year round…? However, I have totally noticed my recent craving for warm stews and soups… I def don’t get those in the summer months but am loving the coziness of these types of meals lately!
it’s hot in malaysia.. so cold brekkies are the way to go.. but i’ve tried oats (i used to hate oats).. and am loving it!
Mmm the apple looks delish in there.
I eat warm oats year round, but also eat yogurt at any time too. Is there anything better than a breakfast that feels like dessert? Nope… probably not.
Definitely going to try this with the crushed grahams… Mmmmm!
Have a great Monday girl!
wow that looks beautiful and tasty. i haven’t completely switched to hot breakfasts yet. i loooove cold greek yogurt too much! though i must admit hot oats w/ pumpkin & cinnamon are very tasty.
I’m right there with you Kristen, I keep going for old yogurt and cereals. When lunch rolls around I’m ready for something hot like soup.
Yum! I had the same dilemma this morning. I didn’t have to put on the AC last night, so when I got up this morning it was (gasp) 70 degrees in my apartment!!! Way too cold for this Florida girl! As much as I was craving cereal, I went with a hot bowl of oats to try to thaw out
looks soo good!! thank you for posting the recipe!!
It’s not cold enough here for a hot breakfast yet…even though that doesn’t stop me if I want it!
Yours looks delicious!
yes, the pumpkin pie shake does exist! so many people are in the dark w/ this fabulous treat!!! if you get a chance to try it, you’ll fall madly in love.
welp, I guess I know what I’m doing with the can of pumpkin I just bought!
yeah~ oatmeal and oat bran are back to my life! I can’t be happier!
I have made a hot breakfast!
It’s a variation of this but w/o the pumpkin and rolled oats instead of oatmeal. I cook peeled and sliced apples with oatmeal until tender and add ground cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. The apples alone should add enough sweetness but you can always drizzle honey or brown sugar over the oatmeal if you need it!
Pie for breakfast = heaven!
As for me, I am still enjoying “cool” breakfasts every morning…I cannot get off of my “green monsters” in a bowl kick. When you discover something that good, it’s hard to say goodbye; even when the temp. is slowly dropping!
Breakfast looks yummy! I am still enjoying my green smoothies in the morning though I have been craving some more warmer foods now. Though mainly just been having some homemade chai tea.
Hit the spot for me!
oh that is genius. i love apples in my yogurt mess…definitely gotta try microwaving them first!
I have started eating fruit cereal (chopped pear, banana, and dates, flax meal and soy milk) and even though it is cold, I find it oddly comforting. I recently had a green monster which I loved all summer, and I was freezing the entire time I was drinking it!
WOW!! Yum, yum! I am going crazy for all of this fall food!! This sounds so yumm.
Just found your blog today, by the way, good stuff! Added to google reader.
Ahh that breakfast does sound heavenly! I loooove warmed apples with different spices on top. They always taste sooo good with some nut butta and crushed graham crackers on top, OR in oats… OR with yogurt and cereal, of course
MMM!! oatmeal is the best! I adore it yearlong!
Wow, this looks really good! Now I know what I’m having for my next meal!!
I do love warm breakfast for fall and this is a great one! I can’t wait to try it. Thanks!
I love that idea! It’s sounds so easy and delish – perfect for a quick and hot breakfast. I still have apples left from my apple picking (I know, can you believe?) and this is a great way to utilize them. Plus, I have so much cereal in my house – this is a wonderful way to combine both. Thank you!
looks awesome! I was thinking toasted pumpkin seeds
It looks delicious and I bet it could satisfy a serious sugar craving for me!
yum! i love putting actually pumpkin filling in with my yogurt! pumpkin pie space IS delicious though.
So funny, I had that same battle with myself this weekend…smoothie for breakfast or something warm…smoothie for breakfast or something warm. Smoothie won. But like you, I went for the pumpkin pie fix.
Yum!! I have definitely switched over to warm fall morning breakfasts… even though it doesn’t really get that cold here in California! I recently blogged about my new fall breakfast favorite, oatmeal with pumpkin butter, bananas and a surprise fruit ingredient… http://nicolegeurin.wordpress.com/2009/10/10/fall-morning-oatmeal/
Wow, the graham cracker idea sounds FAB! I’ve been enjoying this as a snack for the last few weeks, but just yogurt, homemade granola, and baked apple pieces. Sometimes I get crazy and add some mini chocolate chips!
