Maple-Infused Eggwhite Waffle Sandwich

2010 January 14
by Kristen @ Simply Savor

Fast food just doesn’t do it for me like it used to.  Big Mac and greasy fries?  No thanks, I’d rather have my Goat Cheese and Sundried Tomato Stuffed Burgers with crispy baked sweet potato fries (look for the recipe tomorrow!)

I have to admit though, I am and always will be a Dunkin’ Donuts girl.  Their coffee brightens my day, and I’m a big fan of their healthy DDSmart menu options (‘specially the Eggwhite Flatbread sandwiches).  It’s the little things in life, people :)

But then I saw this…(Warning: This is not part of the DDSmart menu!)

image

Fluffy eggs, melted cheese and cherrywood smoked bacon stacked between two maple syrupy waffles!? Yes please!

I was intrigued, but not impressed by the 23 grams of fat (8 of them saturated!), 1000 mg of sodium, added sugars and barely-there fiber content.

So I decided to create my own – which ultimately made my stomach (..and wallet!) very happy.

Maple-Infused Eggwhite Waffle Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 2 Kashi 7 Grain GoLean Waffles
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 Laughing Cow “Light” Cheese wedge
  • 2 slices low sodium Canadian or lean turkey bacon (optional)
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup (sugar free or regular)

Directions

Step 1: Toast up 2 waffles

Step 2:  Microwave 2 egg whites in microwave-safe bowl for 1 min 30 sec (or until fluffy)

Step 3: Smear one side of waffle with cheese wedge, place egg whites on top and drizzle lightly with maple syrup (Note: At this point, I realized I didn’t have any bacon, but feel free to add it to your sandwich!)

Step 4: Slice and enjoy!

Hellloooo deliciousness!

Only 320 calories, 6 grams of fat (a whole lot better than DD’s 23g!), 6 grams of fiber (vs. DD’s 1 g), 500 mg less sodium (than DD) and 25 grams of filling protein.

America runs on Dunkin Simply Savor? Catchy no? ;)

Question for you:

How do you curb your fast food cravings?

Have you made any healthy recipes inspired by your favorite fast food menu items?

Oh my goodness deliciousness! That looks amazing…! I don’t really crave fast food…but I do have a weakness for french fries…! I try and do oven baked fries with lots of cumin to quell my desire for a supersize unhealthy version…!

This looks delicious! I love the sweet/savory combo with the syrup and eggs (I totally dip my eggs in syrup if given the chance, not gonna lie) – I think this is a winner :)

Honeslty I try not to think about fast food. I focus on taking lunch to work and we cook dinner most nights. We do our weekly going out to a restaurant but after not eating at fast food joints I don’t’ have a big craving.

What a great idea, Kristen! Love the photo of the eggs getting fluffy in the microwave – looks so yummy!

The only way I can handle fast food cravings is to ignore completely or cave in… I’ve never thought about making my own healthy version. Sweet potato fries are an excellent substitute for McD’s greasy fries, though!

oooh I love this recipe! I always loved syrup on my eggs for some reason. And eggs on waffles sounds ssoo good! The only fast food I ve ever eaten has been Taco Bell and Ive lost my taste for it. Its good on occasion as a treat. But either than that, I steer clear of fast food.

YUM!!! Will definitely have to try this one! I’d much rather have healthy food then fast food… However, it definitely took me awhile to reach that point.

Great post. I always like to see direct comparisons between similar food products. You own creation definitely seems to be the winner and certainly a healthier choice. Keep up the good work!

I just did a project for one of my preceptors where I had to catalogue the nutrient info for Cheesecake factory, CPK and Unos. Some items had >60g of saturated fat and >4000mg of sodium! When you dig into the nutrient info for some of these places, it’s crazy!! I haven’t had a waffle in forever, thanks for reminding me! bye!

I haven’t had waffles in a while , but this is a prompt reminder to get them! I actually have Van’s in my freezer now…I would probably dump a bottle of syrup on them though! Yikes.
