My Smoothie’s Going Green

Simply Savor Quick Tip of the Day

One of my favorite ways to bulk up and balance out my smoothies is to add spinach!  Yes you heard me correctly :)   For anyone who hates eating their vegetables, this is the perfect way to sneak in an extra daily serving without even noticing!

Just a warning: Your smoothie will turn green, but the good news is you can’t taste the spinach at all.  Promise!

Fruit smoothies are one of my favorite things to make—they’re quick, easy, portable, and filled with healthy antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.  My one complaint is that the high sugar/carb content (good sugars + carbs from fruit so don’t worry!) tends to leave me starving only an hour later.

By adding spinach, I’m getting the increased fiber and water-filled veggies to keep me feeling fuller longer, plus my smoothies are now SUPERCHARGED with Vitamin K, A, manganese, folate, iron, magnesium, Vitamin C, E, calcium…the list goes on and on.

Here’s one way to enjoy a green smoothie, but remember, you can get creative with any ingredients you like!!

I got totally into green monster’s this summer. Very healthy and filling! My nephew’s even tried, and liked, them because they were green and looked weird (apparently looking gross is appealing to a 5 year old boy).

haha too cute… i made green smoothies for my little cousins and called it a SHREK smoothie–they looooved it! now everytime they come over they ask me to make it for them!

Beautiful smoothie! I was always worried spinach would taste so gross in smoothies but you’re right, can’t taste it at all!! It feels great to already have a serving of veggies before the day even begins :O)

I love spinach. I love smoothies. But I am honestly scared to death to combine the two. If i don’t like it, I don’t want to be so traumatized towards either thing that I can’t eat them anymore. I’m sure that won’t happen, and this post confirms that for me, so maybe I will try one this weekend!

haha well good luck!! you’ll have to let me know how it goes..i hope it’s not TOO traumatizing (but i think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!) :)

I haven’t had gone great yet.. why? because I’m uber lame :(

  12. 2009 September 24

yeah~~~ love green smoothies!! I can testify that it tastes great without a taste of spinach!!! hahaha……
I’ve gone green beyond green smoothies. I have green meals everyday!

  13. 2009 September 24

I am totally obsessed with green smoothies as you can tell (on my blog) I have one everyday! It is the greatest for breakfast, lunch or dinner or even a snack. I used to use a lot of spinach when I first got into smoothies though after awhile I started to break out and read from other blogger that she had similar issues. And thought is was from spinach, so I have cut back on my spinach. (My breakouts could also be from my body detoxing)But anyways -I blend up other greens and love them all!!! Such an easier way to incorporate more greens into your diet!!! Which i love!

  14. 2009 September 24

I have not… yet. But I will be soon. I’m hoping to order a magic bullet to start making smoothies very soon! :)

  15. 2009 September 24

I make them occasionally – I haven’t jumped completely on the bandwagon.

We made them a few years ago for a kids’ camp before they were cool and the kids loved them!! Until we told them the secret ingredient :)

  16. 2009 September 24

I haven’t done the green thing yet either :/ Even though I love spinach? Hmmm….

  17. 2009 September 24

I went green today! I had some romaine and spinach that was getting a little funky and I wasn’t in the mood for a salad. So, instead of having it wait another day in the fridge, I blended romaine, spinach, cucumber, tomato, chickpeas, almond milk and half a frozen banana and made a yummy green smoothie/monster. I think the kicker is the frozen banana and almond milk – it gives it all a subtle sweet flavor!

chickpeas and tomato?? what great new ideas, i would never have thought to add them to my smoothie–now i’ll have to test it out! thanks nicole

I have been doing the “Green Thing” for about two months now and I am loving it. I started making them as a shake in the morning, but was sadly missing out on my cereal, which I adore. So I turned my green shake into a bowl and have been topping mine with kashi crunch, almonds and some oats…and of course lots of cinnamon.
    It’s quite enjoyable!

I went green in April and haven’t turned back! I love that I can get a couple of servings of veggies ( I add carrots too!) before I even leave the house for the day, I definitely have more energy, and my skin has improved. It helps that I can’t taste the spinach, only the banana, berries, and almond or peanut butter that I add.

  20. 2009 September 24

I haven’t gone green yet :( . I think part of the reason is that I love to ‘eat’ instead of ‘drink’ my calories, so I am worried about being unsatisfied with drinking a smoothie. However, I must try this, since it is all the craze!

  21. 2009 September 24

ahh I love good old green monsters (I AM from boston) so thats what I call them! throwing in spinach really bumps up the nutrients and I cant even taste the difference! And it turns it a beautiful shade of green

thanks for the recipe it looks delish!

  22. 2009 September 24

    broccoli, strawberry, lime.

  23. 2009 September 24

Hehe, you don’t have to ask ME twice to get crackin’ on the smoothie action!

  24. 2009 September 24

Now i guess i’ve gotta get a blender.. i was always wondering if spinach wouid give off a gross veg taste.. glad to know it doesnt!

  25. 2009 September 24

I’m sure you meant 1/2 cup blueberries instead of 12 cup. :) But…I do like blueberries so maybe…..

Thanks for the great smoothie tip!

  26. 2009 September 24

I haven’t tried one yet! I feel like there’s so much spinach in my diet already that I just haven’t bothered adding it to smoothies.

  27. 2009 September 24

Yes of course!! My fave combo is simple and a classic: almond milk, banana, vanilla protein powder, spinach, ice, ground flax and/or almond butter!! SIMPLY DIVINE! :)

  28. 2009 September 25

I’ve never tried a green smoothie but your pictures have convinced me that even with spinach they MUST be delicious, so I’m going to!! :)

  29. 2009 September 25

I have to admit, I have never put spinach in a smoothie because I was sure that I would be able to taste the bitterness. I’m so glad that you tried it and confirmed that you can’t taste it! Now, I just have to get past the green color…
