Simply Savor Quick Tip of the Day: Smart Snackfood Swaps
I’m a huge snacker. I love little tastes of a lot of things throughout the day to keep me satisfied and prevent me from overeating at meals. Snacking, believe it or not, can be a successful tool for weight loss… if done right. This means avoiding the temptation of the vending machines and party-sized bags of Doritos in favor of wholesome, nutrient-dense foods to keep you feeling satisfied. If you’re someone who snacks on a lot of junk food throughout the day, here’s a Simply Savor quick tip to start making small changes in your eating habits:
Pick one “junky” snack food that you eat each day (think candy, cookies, potato chips etc) that you’d like to eat less of, and swap it for one of the snack suggestions down below. Or feel free to come up with your own healthy creations and share them with us!
Some of Simply Savor’s favorite snack foods:
-Apple slices with 2 tbsp all-natural peanut butter
-1 cup Plain, nonfat yogurt (Greek or regular) topped with your favorite fruit (or cereal)
-Make-it-yourself trail mix with nuts and dried fruit (1 serving is about a handful)
-2 tbsp. Hummus with dipping plate (1/2 whole wheat pita, turkey/chicken slices, sliced cucumbers, carrots, bell peppers, etc)
-Handful of frozen grapes
-1 cup kettlecorn popcorn (sprinkled with cinnamon or a little parmesan cheese)
-Baked sweet potato fries (cut into discs, sprinkle with salt/cumin/chili powder etc. and bake at 400F for 30 min)
-Hardboiled egg
-Turkey rollups: 1 slice turkey, 1 slice reduced fat cheese (optional: wrapped in lettuce)
-String cheese with a couple whole wheat crackers
++++
Small steps like this help show that it is possible to find alternatives to your favorite junk food that are not only healthy for you, but taste good too! Striving to eat healthy doesn’t mean completely overhauling your diet in one day. It is the small changes that begin to add up and help initiate more changes in the future to get the results you want!
Leave a comment letting me know YOUR favorite snacks. I’m always looking for new ideas so this is a great way to share with one another. Can’t wait to hear what you all come up with!
Happy snacking!

Banana boats! One slice wheat bread, spread with pb, wrapped around a banana.
Apples and almond butter are my favorite. Sometimes if Im really hungry too I eat one serving of oatmeal with a little vanilla stevia in it. Its hard to pick to my favorite snack since there are so many! Also sometimes a bowl of puffed millet with almond milk. I also love some air popped popcorn. Takes forever to eat and fills me up!
I normally have a piece of toast w/PB and a dizzle of honey
If I’m out of the house, I go for some time of bar, like Lara Bars.
Great post – love new snack ideas! I like bananas with almond butter, or celery with almond butter, and cheese and crackers are a go to!
Great tips! I really like cheese and cured meats with wheat crackers in small quantities. I know it’s higher in fat than a lot of those choices (maybe besides the PB) but it keeps me feeling full.
Pretzels are another good choice I think because of how much you need to chew on them.
I love to have a nice chunk of cheddar cheese + a juicy apple… perfect snack in my book, yum! I totally agree with you that snacks are crucial to a healthy diet… if I only ate meals I’d be a hungry disaster and def overeat!
Funny that this is your topic today as it is also the topic of one of the ‘Daily Spark’ posts on sparkpeople.com – and some of your favourite snacks are that authors too!

Snacks I bring to work are: apples, bananas, carrot and/or pepper slices with yogurt dip, and walnuts
My favourite at home snack when I just *have* to munch out at night is popcorn popped in a brown paper bag in the microwave (avoiding nasty microwave popcorn bag chemicals)
mmm snacks — now you’re speaking my language
thanks for the ideas! I have been in a snack rut lately (aka eating bars in mass quantities)
I honestly love to snack on fruit (I have never had frozen grapes I am intrigued) but also avocado with sea salt and lime juice! I think the right snacks are important for anyone to maintain a good weight.
My favorite snack is Greek yogurt with with granola & fresh fruit!
Cucumber and Celery dipped in Peach and Mango Salsa is a favorite snack of mine!
Thanks so much for the IBS information! I’m going to look up the diet plan you mentioned, and I’ll post about my thoughts in a post soon
I love learning new resources and helpful information. Thanks for reading!
Oh, and I’m a HUGE snacker. I love sweet potato fries, popcorn, and string cheese, and bars of course!
Great ideas! Here are some of mine:
cottage cheese and Sunbutter
snack mix with cereal, nuts, and dried fruit
pretzels and PB
I loved that first picture of the delighted girl digging into chips, lol!
I love to snack on roasted plantain chips, pretzels, nuts, fruit, sweet potatoes, or even a grilled cheese sandwich.
I’m a big snacker too. I like hummus rolled up in big leafs of endive or romaine, a couple of clementines, and celery with a handful of different dips.
This list is great : )
I’m a huge fan of apples with Skippy’s Natural peanut butter and vanilla yogurt with gingersnap granola. Thanks for the new ideas!
Hi Kristen -
I like to stir a little pumpkin into my oatmeal. Pumpkin muffins, scones, and pancakes are also delicious breakfast options. Love love love pumpkin =) …and I’ve been meaning to try chocolate-pumpkin brownies – yum!
I like frozen peas right out of the bag. They are SO good! And good for you! I also like baby carrots and a couple tablespoons of hummus when I’m in the mood for some crunching!
i love baked sweet potato for snacks!! so filling and comforting
In the winter, I love citrus salad as a snack. Orange and grapefruit wedges, some almond slices and a small amount of dried cranberries. So refreshing!
Great post darlin’! Some of my fave snacks are baked sweet potatoes, vega smoothies, apples, oatmeal, carrot sticks w/ almond butter, and anything baked…..lol
I hope you have a great evening!!!
XXOO
i heart snacking on pb.. best EVER. but kinda hard to stop!
I’m a fruit pig, by far.
BUT I do like a plain rice cake smeared with either PB or AB and jam or honey. If it has the word “cake” in it, it has to be tasty!
I love an apple, chopped up and sprinkled with cinnamon and then microwaved for a minute or two. It gets all warm and sweet like apple pie but so much healthier!
Thanks for the book suggestion!
Thanks so much for letting me know about it!
So far the FODMAP diet is working well, but I’ve only been “on it” for about 5 days
Great blog. I’ll definitely be revisiting. Some of these combos are def. my favorite snacks!
I’m not a big snacker and less recently (since main meals satisfy me more). but when I snack, I usually go with fruits, nuts, toasts.
